Merz Apothecary is one of Chicago’s oldest retail businesses. We specialize in natural health, personal care, beauty, fragrance, men’s grooming and more. We have two stores in Chicago – our flagship in Lincoln Square and Merz Downtown in the Loop. Smallflower is our e-commerce and direct mail brand that has been in existence since 1998. We also have a men’s shop and burgeoning private label brand called Q Brothers. In addition to our stores, sites, and brands, we are a leading seller on the Amazon marketplace. Ours is a very active, 144-year-old, 40+ person, family-run business that has service and the sharing of knowledge among our core values.
Job Brief
Merz is seeking an Herbal and Natural Health Sales Associate to work closely with customers to listen to their needs, answer their questions about our products, and recommend the right solutions. Our ideal candidate has an herbalist certification or has demonstrated significant knowledge concerning herbs and/or supplements for the maintenance of health. The position works closely with our pharmacist and the rest of our store team to provide excellent customer service, while consistently meeting the store’s sales goals.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a key resource to customers on herbs, supplements, and/or natural health protocols
- Provide consultative customer service to access customer needs and make appropriate product recommendations
- Build knowledge of products and brands offered in our assortment
- Build productive trusting relationships with customers
- Ensure shelves and displays are stocked and maintained in presentable condition
- Process POS (point of sale) purchases at the register
- Help maintain inventory control and a proper assortment of product offerings
- Work with the team to suggest ways to improve sales
Requirements
- Certification in herbalism or significant natural health knowledge based on experience
- Strong communication, listening skills, and interpersonal skills, including the ability to ask probing questions, understand concerns, and overcome challenges
- Excellent customer service experience
- Desire and ability to connect with people
- A friendly and energetic personality
- Attention to detail
- Excellent team and collaboration skills
- Availability to work flexible shifts, Saturdays
Experience and Education
- Experience in a natural health or homeopathic environment
- Established retail sales and customer service experience
- High school diploma or GED diploma
- Proficiency in English
- Fluency in German, Romanian, Polish, Serbo-Croatian, or other second languages a plus
